Machine tool operator

Position Summary

Work from a series of production orders at a machine tool, performing with moderate to general supervision.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Work with metal working machinery to drill, tap, countersink, punch, buff, saw, machine, extrude or other similar operations.
  • Inspect the equipment visually for lubrication and alignment, inspect the dimensions and the appearance of the first piece of every operation and additional pieces during a production run, based on a predetermined sampling system.
  • Study blueprint or layout on work piece to visualize machining required, and plan sequence of operations.
  • Be sure of method for holding work piece.
  • Lift work piece manually or using hoist, to position and secure it to holding device such as machine table, chuck, vice, pre determined stop or fixture.
  • Verifies work piece position.
  • Verify conformance of machined work piece to specifications.
  • Pack the product onto carts, baskets or into boxes/crates, set up the boxes/crates to load the pieces for shipment to the platter, the aging operation, and additional processes or for quality inspection.
  • Log all operations into a computer and on manufacturing documentation.
  • Clean and lubricate equipment to maintain a safe working environment.

Specific Qualifications
Must maintain positive, productive relationships with other workers in the department, the supervisor, quality inspectors and the shipping group.

Technical Qualifications
May utilize basic measuring devices, such as gauges, micrometers, calipers and a leveling table.

Physical Qualifications
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Traveling by car and or train may be required.

Must be able to lift and carry parts and tools of up to 50 (fifty) pounds.

Education and/or experience
One to two years related experience and/or training.

Language Skills
Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.

Mathematical Skills
Ability to work with mathematical concepts. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.

Reasoning Ability
Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
